HAVI Logistics Environment

Protection of the environment is a central element of HAVI Logistics’ corporate culture. HAVI Logistics constantly strive to minimize the impact of its business activities on the environment. Every employee is committed to environmentally friendly activities and such behaviour is also espoused by all management levels.

HAVI Logistics’ commitment to the environment means that the company chooses the most environmentally friendly processes, make conscious use of natural resources, and insists on environmentally friendly production procedures that save energy as well as avoiding waste. Compliance with environmental laws is self-evident. The permanent reduction of energy consumption by means of innovative storage techniques or heat-recovery systems for heating offices and ambient storage areas is a basic component of environmental policy in most HAVI Logistics companies. In addition to several local environmental awards, various companies have already undergone the environmental audit according to DIN EN ISO 14001 and acquired the additional certification of EMAS, the Eco Management and Audit Scheme. HAVI Logistics Germany is one of the first companies worldwide to be validated according the new stricter standard EMAS III.

The 710 trucks in the HAVI Logistics fleet are among the "greenest" seen on the roads anywhere in Europe. The fleet runs mainly on alternative fuels. Besides using biodiesel fuel made from rapeseed oil. HAVI Logistics also employs pure plant oil in the Netherlands and natural gas in Switzerland. For several years the company has been also placing its bets firmly on FAME. Fatty acid methyl ester is a regenerative raw material containing a low percentage of sulfur. The idea is a simple stroke of genius: HAVI Logistics daily delivers hundreds of litres of cooking oil to the McDonald’s Restaurants to deep-fry French Fries and other products. When the oil can no longer be used, a collector picks it up and brings it to a recycling plant. There it is processed into FAME and this fuel is used by HAVI Logistics trucks to bring fresh oil to the Restaurants again.Using FAME instead of conventional diesel reduces soot emissions by a good 50 percent. What's more, FAME is biodegradable and non-toxic. Furthermore, some HAVI Logistics companies supply their customers using a combination of rail and trucks.

All tailor-made HAVI Logistics Distribution Centers are equipped with heat-recovery systems which convert waste heat from refrigerating units into useable indoor heating. This intelligent energy management saves costs according to the motto “avoid, reduce, recycle” and, at the same time, protects the environment.

Various HAVI Logistics Distribution Centers use Photovoltaic Systems to produce cold air that is used to store the products deep frozen and chilled in the warehouses. With these solar projects HAVI Logistics reduce CO2 emissions by 422 tonnes per year.

10 HAVI Logistics Distribution Centers are integrated in a so called Food Town. Although the idea is a plausible one, it did cause a bit of a sensation when HAVI Logistics, together with two other suppliers as partners, opened the first Food Town in Duisburg, Germany in October 1988. An industrial-sized bakery and a meat processing plant were built back to back with the German HAVI Logistics Distribution Center. Besides the many different positive effects and immense cost savings, the wall-on-wall concept of a combined production facility and a Distribution Center really pays off for the environment.

These and many other activities prove that HAVI Logistics is and will remain a pacemaker in terms of environmental friendly business. All environmental activities are documented in the HAVI Logistics brochure “IT’S EASY TO BE GREEN”.
