HAVI Logistics is one of the first companies worldwide to achieve validation in accordance with the environmental requirements of EMAS III Regulation (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme), which are currently the most stringent in use.
To meet the tightened requirements set by the EMAS III Regulation, HAVI Logistics has identified all significant emissions from the vehicles in the company fleet. The Logistics Service Provider has also measured and recorded the CO2 emissions due to the energy sources used by the company, such as diesel, electric power and natural gas. In 2009, for example, HAVI Logistics prevented about 1.5 million kilograms of CO2 emissions by using biodiesel instead of conventional diesel. "HAVI Logistics has not only maintained the high standards set by the environmental management scheme EMAS but has demonstrably improved its performance in this area by being validated in accordance with the new EMAS III Regulation," stated the environmental auditor, Prof. Helmut Wirner from Eurocerta Food GmbH.
"The EMAS III validation confirms the effectiveness of our environmental management strategy," was the happy reaction of Hans-Dieter Hojnacki, Operations Manager HAVI Logistics Germany. "Over the medium term, we will replace all the conventional trucks in our vehicle fleet with Euro 5 trucks operating on biodiesel, increase our use of AME biodiesel fuel, and introduce alternative refrigeration methods," he added.
Many of the European HAVI Logistics companies are currently certified as conforming with the environmental standard EN ISO 14001 or validated in accordance with the EMAS Regulation. HAVI Logistics in Germany was the first logistics company in Europe to introduce this integrated environmental management system ten years ago.
